Looking at the recent figures from the Office of National Statistics it’s clear that online internet based shopping is a growth industry. Whilst we are constantly hearing of yet another chained retailer in difficulties. What makes matters worse for the companies trying to survive is that large open spaces in High Street locations are expensive to protect from squatters and are obviously vacant once trading is mothballed.
Umbrella Guardians have a successful track record of utilising such open spaced department store type properties for our live in property guardians. Our recent property in Rugby High Street being a prime example of cost saving for the owners. We’ve stepped in to secure the property, film the glazing to protect from prying eyes, begin negotiations to reduce the business rates and taken over the management of the property.
In April 2018, the quantity of goods bought in the retail industry remained relatively flat with a slight increase of 0.1% in the three-month on three-month movement. When compared with March 2018, the quantity bought in April increased by 1.6% as all sectors, excluding department stores, recovered from the declines seen in March. Department stores showed a different monthly picture to all other sectors as the only sector to report a fall in quantities bought, at negative 0.9% in April following strong online sales in March.
Umbrella Guardians are ready to help property owners cut the spend on their non operational estates, which could make the difference between the entire chain folding or just being rationalised…
